February 2010
Media Lab Opens to the Public
at Pelham Art Center
A new Media Lab was completed in January at the Pelham Art Center and will welcome students of all ages for classes and workshops beginning in February.
The Art Center’s darkroom has been replaced with a new studio with eight 21.5” iMAC’s with Adobe Creative Suite software, two video cameras, a digital SLR camera, and a scanner, printer and projector. The lab was created with a grant from the Countess Moira Foundation in support of its efforts to provide adults and youth with opportunities to participate in art education programs. Additional funding was received from the Capital Program at New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency, and the Boards of the Pelham Art Center.
16 Media Lab courses, to begin in late February, will be taught by working artists and include:
• Light and Photograph Your Artwork taught by Nick Kuskin
• Photography for Beginners taught by Barry Mason
• Graphic and Digital Arts taught by Stephanie Victor
• Putting Together a Digital Portfolio taught by Nick Kuskin
• Film taught by Stephanie Schleicher, Wayne Hodge and Kemah Keita
• Animation and Claymation taught by Stephanie Schleicher
Registration for media classes for the spring term has begun and is ongoing through February. Visit www.pelhamartcenter.org or call 738-2525 ext 111 to learn more or see the catalog. Classes and workshops are for adults or youth aged 5-18. High school students may enroll in adult courses.
The opening of the Media Lab completes Phase I renovations at the Art Center which began in July 2009. The new amenities include: a large new gallery, spacious lobby and reception area, consolidated staff offices and a new security and fire alarm system for the 5,000 square foot building.
Lisa Robb, Pelham Art Center Director comments: “We are excited and proud to offer the public this new art making studio and we are very grateful to the group of funders who made it happen. When interest in darkroom photography began to wane in recent years ago, staff and Board decided to replace it with an art making resource that was missing in the communities we serve. We found there are very few MAC computer studios operated by charities and even fewer located in community based arts organizations like Pelham Art Center. It is also fitting to open the lab in 2010 which now marks two important milestones: the 40th Anniversary of the first Art Happening and the opening of a new learning studio that uses 21st century art making tools.”
A free Media Lab Open House Workshop will allow the public to visit the lab and work with some of its digital art making tools. The workshop will take place Saturday, February 13 from 1:30 – 3:30. This free workshop is supported in part by a grant from ArtsWestchester, through county government.
